A Shanghainese friend I knew from Waseda introduced me to this cafe and I absolutely adore it! The coffee is really good, but what I really love is its atmosphere.
She described the vibe as 90s Shanghai*. I don’t know much about that, but I definitely appreciate the little details that went into decor and furnishing. The interior is clean and simple, but the framed black and white photographs on the wall and the mini ceramic pots on the table elevate the whole ambiance.
It’s so tiny and cute! Reminds me of the mini pottery making video Kel showed me. Can you believe that the pot holds water and the plant is actually real?? I love that touch of authenticity.
Maybe because I was the only customer when I was there, the staff was very attentive to my needs. She came up to me offering a straw (which I didn’t use because #savetheearth haha) and a serviette when she saw that I was licking my lips after I took a sip from the glass. 😅
白鸟咖啡 White Bird Cafe and Diner
*She might have meant another outlet at 瑞金二路198弄1号2楼, which according to the images I found online looks and feels rather different from the one I visited. It seems more retro for sure. Nevertheless, the coffee quality should be equally good!
